“Hey There Truckstop Girl
Beautiful and Disinfected
Hot water in your pail,
Today your hair is clean and shiny..”
Truck stops are home stops for road lifer’s. The parking lots are large, well it, and relatively safe. On those days when finding a good place to boondock proves impossible, a truck stop can save your day. It reminds me of a story…
A busy day, leaving Madrid on the A4, traffic is heavy, we have some shopping to do, and we are tired. Just before sunset, we drive some rural roads and find a small country church. It’s quiet, remote, and the vibe feels good here. We make dinner, eat, and go to sleep. Sometime in the middle of the night we both awaken with a weird feeling. It’s pitch black out. From the direction of the church graveyard, some unseen birds are making noise and seem disturbed. We have that uncanny feeling that someone else is here. We decide, immediately and simultaneously, despite the late hour and us not knowing where we are, that we should leave. We aren’t scared, but we are on guard now and just a bit nervous.
A quick jump to the front seat… keys in… Eldo started for our quick escape from this unknown presence. Waiting until the last possible second before turning on the lights, we are going to high tail it out of there. Much to our surprise, as soon as Eldo’s lights are on, we now see the disturbance responsible for our 3am wake up. It’s not some malevolent angry graveyard ghost, it’s two large RV’s that must have arrived after we went to sleep. We didn’t hear them pull in, but we sure felt them.
Already in motion, and laughing at ourselves for our misinterpretation of the vibe, we decide to keep driving. Less than an hour later, we find a nice, safe, and well lit truck stop to sleep at. It’s not adventurous or romantic, but sometimes one needs some truck stop civilization to get that comfortable night of sleep. The next morning… Elizabeth is out at the table washing her hair in a bucket of warm water and waving to the friendly truckers as they pull in and out, looking for their own safe place to park.
